mia carriera, e il rifiuto di Giovanni Papini di concedermi un' intervista mi lasciò molto infastidito.Rifiutarmi un'intervista dopo che ero andato a Firenze appositamente per lui? Mi pareva il colmo! E la stessa sera, tornato in albergo, gli scrissi una lettera non troppo gentile, in cui esponevo il mio punto di vista.<br><br> Il giorno dopo, a mano, mi fu portata la sua risposta. La scrittura piccola e vacillante di Papini mi costò molta fatica a comprenderlo. Ma il suo contenuto mi fece capire quanta ne era costata a lui lo scriverla.<br><br> Con garbo signorile, tutto toscano, lo scrittore mi trattava da presuntuoso e ignorante (visto che ignoravo il fatto della sua incipiente cecità), perché non avevo capito che se lui non mi aveva dato l'intervista era perché, non essendo un buon parlatore, aveva bisogno di leggere il testo, ed essendo quasi cieco, non poteva fare neppure questo. Comunque, mi dava lo stesso un appuntamento per il giorno seguente.<br><br> Mi recai da lui con un gran senso di vergogna...ma egli mi accolse sotto un albero enorme. Non fece cenno alla mia indiscrezione, e mentre io preparavo il registratore, commentò: " Ha visto che bell'albero? Pensi che l'ho piantato io stesso, molti e molti anni fa"..E ciò voleva significare che era vecchio e stanco.<br><br> Mi parlò della sua "Vita di Cristo", del "Diavolo" e delle altre sue opere, e l'intervista si rivelò essere una delle migliori possibili.
